This beautiful cradle is a copy of an original Shaker piece on display in the Shaker Museum in Old Chatham, NY. The original is built of pine, but we chose to make ours with cherry because of its availability and lovely color. The cradle is joined with handcut dovetails and given a shellac finish, in keeping with the antique origins of the piece. Shellac is a nontoxic, water-resistant natural finish that enhances the fine figure of the wood. It measures 23" wide, 22" tall, and 36" long.
The simple Shaker design is well suited to a newborn child. The headboard and sides are raised to protect the baby from drafts. The rockers are extended to provide stability and allow a parent to rock the baby gently with one foot. When your babies grow up they can rock their own children in it.
